Spider and robot tracking
Problem:
Does opentracker track search engine spiders / bots?
Solution:
No, we do not track search engine spiders. We built Opentracker to interact with browsers operated by people, so that we are only measuring human events. This has both advantages and disadvantages, the disadvantage being that now we cannot tell you which spiders have visited your site.
The advantage is that Opentracker is purpose-built to record visits by unique visitors with a very high accuracy. We are very strict in our definition of a visitor, and hence often present lower visitor numbers than other systems. We have written a piece on this subject, called tracking-vs-log-analyzers.
The difference in numbers between any log files that you have and Opentracker will be largely accounted for by repeat visitors and search engine bots.
